Glass House Bricks

It may be a surprising thing to hear, but eco friendly house building was around in the 1960’s, what is more surprising is who was involved, Alfred Heineken the man who runs the brewery of the same name.

While on a visit to the Caribbean he was appalled at the amount of beer bottles that were just floating around the coastlines and equally appalled at the amount of people who were homeless because of the lack of building materials.

This is where he comes up with the square beer bottle; once it was used it could then be used to build a wall, how absolutely incredible! Yet this idea was so ahead of its time that nobody was interested. Only 10,000 bottles were made and most of them were used to build a shed in Alfred Heinekens garden.
