Village gets windfall
For any village that is to all intents and purposes cut off from the rest of the world, a gift of over one million pounds could make quite a difference to the place and the people, or so you would think!
Pellevoisin is situated in the fantastic Loire Valley, but it is a plain place with no spectacular sites to attract tourists, apart from the convent a couple of miles away where a vision of the Virgin Mary was seen in 1876. But as miracles go being left one million pounds in the will of an elderly woman who had cut off her family could be seen as a touch of fate.
However there are a few conditions that have torn the village in half. The main street is to be renamed after her, all of her favourite paintings are to be hung in the mayors office in the town hall, her house can only be sold to someone from Paris and the can only be used to build council houses which should be rented out at a peppercorn rent to poor families.
